The first week of competition was a solid start for the boys. After finishing two points behind the winner Bremen at the District 228 Quad, the boys finished second to Eisenhower at the Hillcrest Invite.
At D228, Ishaan Patel led the way with a 2nd place finish, followed closely by Nick Martin (3rd). Josh Hartman took 6th for the 2nd consecutive year to also earn a medal. Frosh/soph was led by freshmen Eddie Mankiewicz and Nathan Okewole. Freshman Ramiro Perez ran a gutsy first race, running through asthma issues the final 800m to outkick a nearby competitor.
At Hillcrest, junior Nick Martin claimed his first career invitational win, running away with the race after the first half mile. Ishaan Patel, who was a race time decision to compete, took 4th. Hartman once again rounded out the medalists for the Titans by finishing 10th. Solid races by Nick Marfoe and sophomore Latrell Lloyd helped lead the team to a 2nd place finish.
On frosh/soph, sophomores Nitt Gopi and Adrian Izaguirre led the way with 11th and 12th place finishes, just missing out on medals of their own.
Overall, it was a solid start to the season. If a fifth runner on varsity emerges and closes the gap with the fourth, this team can be pretty competitive come time for the championship phase of the season.
Nick & Ishaan leading the way at D228
On a day with very slow times all across the meet, sophomore Nick Martin led the team by placing 3rd in his first ever varsity invite. His [unofficial] time of 18:46 is over 90 seconds slower than his season opener, but times don’t matter as much when you’re running at the Basin. Ishaan Patel, Josh Hartman, Nate Berrones, and Jay Pillai rounded out the top 5.
Frosh/Soph was led by Ryan Franklin who ran a great race. His time of 21:50 is a 40 second PR, which comes on a day where many runners ran 2 minutes slower than usual. His hard work over the summer is starting to pay off!
The team returns to action on Saturday, September 9 at Reavis High School for the Running Rams Invitational.
Nick Martin edges out Bremen’s Tony Jucik to win the F/S race with a time of 17:13.
The day started off with a bang, when sophomore Nick Martin won the frosh/soph race with a new PR of 17:13 — 2:00 faster than his freshman year best. He won the race after catching Bremen’s Tony Jucik with a great final 400m. Teammate Ishaan Patel made the exact same move, passing Bremen’s Lovrich the final meters of the race to take 3rd with a time of 17:43 in his first career cross country race!
Other great performances on frosh/soph came from sophomore Nate Berrones, missing his personal record by less than 10 seconds. Also, freshman Nitthian Gopi ran an incredible first race with a time of 20:42 after opening up his first mile in 6:12! Notable finish came from freshman Jake Mrofka who ran approximately 2:00 faster his final mile than either of the first two miles. Great job to all of the frosh/soph runners on a solid start to the season.
Varsity only ran with five runners after senior/captain John Kennedy was a late scratch for precautionary reasons. Junior/captain Josh Hartman led the way and showed the district what a solid off season can do. After breaking 21:00 only once as a sophomore, he took 6th on varsity with a new PR of 17:40! Josh has been one of the team’s hardest workers since cross country ended last fall. He started last season with a 25:47 at Midlothian Meadows.
The top five was rounded out by solid performances by Nick Marfoe, Jay Pillai, David Dilley, and Christian Johnson.
The boys return to action on Saturday when they head to the Hillcrest Basin (171st St & Rockwell Ave) for the Hillcrest Invite! The varsity race will feature the cross country debut of track standout [senior] Jason Ludtke. Go Titans!
